Your pool pump is responsible for moving water through the system, so when it stops working correctly, problems can show up quickly.

Some pump issues are relatively simple. Others involve electrical, plumbing, automation or equipment failures that need professional diagnosis. Here are eight common problems Aqua Mechanix sees with pool pumps in the Austin area.

1. The pump will not turn on

A pump that appears completely dead may have an electrical issue, control problem, failed motor component or another fault.

Before repeatedly resetting breakers or controls, it is worth determining why the pump lost power or stopped responding.

2. The pump runs but does not move enough water

Low flow can be caused by restrictions, valve positions, plumbing issues, air entering the system, filter conditions, pump problems or incorrect variable-speed settings.

Because flow affects other equipment, low-flow problems can also cause heaters and other components to stop operating.

3. The pump loses prime

If a pump cannot maintain prime, air may be entering the suction side of the system or there may be another hydraulic issue.

Repeatedly restarting the pump without addressing the cause can create additional problems.

4. The pump is unusually loud

Grinding, screeching, rattling or other new sounds can indicate mechanical wear, debris or failing components.
